Overview

Recent research and clinical work have demonstrated that the rapid urologic innovation in minimally invasive treatment is creating exciting new horizons in endourology. This sixth volume in the series Recent Advances in Endourology brings that knowledge to a wider audience, focusing on the new concept of endourooncology, which is the merging of endourology and oncology. In the surgical treatment of urologic malignancies, bipolarization - that is, radical extended resection or organ-sparing surgery - is making remarkable advances. Further developments in sophisticated reconstructive surgery using robotic systems and image-guided ablation technology will allow surgeons to formulate minimally invasive, tailor-made procedures for each patient with urologic cancer. Description: This collection of review articles is presented as one of a series of publications from the Japanese Society of Endourology and ESWL. The 13 articles included review the technologies that are currently being used and evaluated by endourologists and laparoscopists for the management of oncologic disease.
Purpose: According to the chief editor, this book will enable the reader to envision future horizons in endourology. It is certainly worthwhile to present cutting-edge technologies, as they are being evaluated and incorporated into urologists' practices. The book does a fine job providing a concise review of the topics.
Audience: Although not specifically stated by the authors, this book seems to be written for general urologists as well as those with an interest in being updated about the various technologies that are being used and evaluated for the minimally invasive management of urologic cancer.
Features: The book covers various technologies used by urologists around the world. There are several chapters on robotics and telesurgery. The book provides a nice overview of some of the most common energy-based technologies including radio-frequency ablation, cryoablation and high-intensity focused ultrasound.
Assessment: This book provides a nice collection of reviews for urologists wanting to learn about the various technologies and energy-based modalities that are being used regularly by many urologists around the world. Not all urologists will be interested in learning about these technologies or making them part of their armamentarium. However, as these technologies become more integrated into the mainstream of urology, it is important that all urologists have a basic understanding of the various technologies and treatment modalities available.
