Description: This book reviews the anatomy and physiology of the respiratory system and covers many of the most commonly encountered respiratory emergencies, as well as how to perform certain airway management procedures.
Purpose: Although the preface states that this book was written to provide an approach to "clinical problems as clinicians approach patients," this book does not do much in terms of helping readers hone their critical thinking skills. There are no step-by-step instructions on how to approach a patient with a particular chief complaint. Rather, this book provides a good foundation of knowledge along with detailed information on how to perform certain lifesaving procedures.
Audience: The author, a paramedic, firefighter, and EMS instructor in New York state, is the author of a number of other EMT works, including Paramedic Survival Guide (McGraw-Hill, 2012). In the preface, he notes that this book is meant to be a resource for EMS professionals at all levels of training, from student to practitioner. Other health professionals also may find it useful, particularly as an introduction to intubation and the use of various oxygen delivery and airway devices. Experienced paramedics may find the chapters covering the fundamentals of the respiratory system interesting, but are unlikely to glean any new clinical pearls. Ultimately, this book is most appropriate for readers familiar with the basic sciences and some medical terminology who are new to the world of respiratory emergencies.
Features: Among the topics the book covers are basic respiratory anatomy and physiology, acid-base balance, pulse oximetry, continuous positive airway pressure, respiratory pharmacology, commonly encountered respiratory emergencies, intubation, difficult airways, and emergency respiratory equipment. Each chapter begins with learning objectives and ends with a set of multiple choice review questions. There is also a useful glossary on key respiratory terms. As a fourth-year medical student going into emergency medicine, I found this book informative and a good introduction to the respiratory system and airway management. However, the book was difficult to read at times due to typographical errors and inconsistent structural organization. For example, the table of contents lists "Patients and Findings" and "Conclusions" as two sections in chapter 8 on rapid sequence intubation, but these two sections actually refer to and summarize a study mentioned in another subsection of the chapter. Occasionally, I came across paragraphs that felt out of place or repetitious and questions that were posed, but never adequately answered. Despite these shortcomings, the author does a nice job of explaining difficult concepts regarding physiology and acid-base interpretations. He provides good descriptions of various airway devices with easy-to-follow, step-by-step instructions for their use.
Assessment: Future editions of this book could use some editing to improve the flow and organization of information. And, although it falls short in walking readers through the critical thinking process, the book does provide a good framework on which to build critical thinking skills. Future editions expanding on this book's use of clinical scenarios would truly set it apart from other books in this field.
