Description: This perfectly accurately titled textbook describes several healthcare technologies that are currently being created and implemented. The book describes not only complex emerging technologies, but also the much bigger picture of the complex healthcare industry, the explosive tech industry, the urgent need for nursing to evolve, and the intersection of all these concepts within a cultural and historical perspective. This small book includes only seven chapters. One unique feature of the book is the glossary at the end of each chapter. The accompanying online version seems to simply be the book online without many unique added features other than the instructor PowerPoint slides.
Purpose: The purpose of the book is to educate nurses about the revolutionary changes taking place in health care today due to explosive advances in technology. A notable line from the preface says the book "serves to build on nursing informatics fundamentals to contribute to new knowledge about emerging technologies." Another line describes the book's main objective as "to create a resource for nurses to gain in-depth knowledge about specific emerging technological healthcare innovations." The book unquestionably has worthy objectives and it is definitely needed. The online version seems to be just that - an online version of identical material. The materials soundly meet the stated objectives by not only describing complex concepts very simply and elegantly, but by calmly relating how huge this revolution is and how it has already changed and will continue to change both life and nursing as we know them.
Audience: The book is aimed at both working nurses and nursing students. Each chapter ends with a short list of "thought-provoking questions" that are genuinely thought-provoking. Many of them ask the readers to consider their own nursing working environment. The book goes beyond meeting the needs of the intended audience. It not only informs nurses of the immense changes that are happening; it manages to calm all fear of these changes and to inspire nurses to embrace them. It gives plenty of respect and credit to the nursing profession, and it makes a very even and reasonable case for nurses to enhance life for all humans by becoming a part of the healthcare IT revolution. The author is the senior editor at the Online Journal of Nursing Informatics - a well-regarded journal of which I am familiar.
Features: A major strength of this excellent book is the way it carefully explains the seismic shift in the healthcare IT industry and the opportunities nurses have to be a part of it. Using understandable analogies and examples from our daily lives that anyone can follow, the book explains a variety of emerging technologies, and the great benefits and future possibilities of what is coming. It makes the readers feel comfortable by explaining specific details regarding the great improvements and exciting changes the nursing profession is about to experience; and how necessary they are. The writing is superb; the explanations build slowly and teach the readers what future nurses must know and why. It bears repeating that the "Thought-provoking Questions" sections at the end of each chapter are very thoughtfully done, and the glossaries at the end of each chapter work very well, as each chapter introduces huge concepts and a lot of new vocabulary. One point I found interesting is that more than a few references were personal communications from interviews. When do we ever see that in a textbook?
Assessment: This is an excellent, well-written textbook. One could even say it is a well-written book in general. It is very interesting to read. I read three of the seven 30-page chapters simply because they were so interesting and well-written. The book goes far beyond describing nursing informatics; it describes how technology has become more and more part of everyday life and how great that is. It demonstrates how bright the future of not just health care, but the future of health will be for everyone. It breaks down the value of nurses and demonstrates how nurses will be happier in their work because of the advances in technology. Unlike most nursing informatics books that make technology seem like a difficult burden that nurses simply must learn or risk becoming unemployable, the tone of this book is optimistic and inspirational. It holds nurses up and values them. This is far and away the best "nursing informatics" textbook I have seen, possibly in part because it doesn't call itself a nursing informatics book.
