Overview

The Manchester Triage System (MTS) is the most widely used triage system in the UK, Europe and Australia, with tens of millions of patients being processed through hospital emergency departments. It is also used in hospitals throughout Brazil.

Emergency Triage is the core text for the MTS, which utilises a risk averse system of prioritisation for patients in all unscheduled care settings.  As such, it is an essential text for all emergency department staff using the MTS, in particular triage nurses. The book is both a training tool and a reference for daily use in the Emergency Department and prehospital settings.

This book contains the basic knowledge necessary for triage practitioners to build competency in performing triage. It is intended to accompany a structured training course, teaching practitioners how to set up a method of standardized triage. This handbook is intended to help practitioners develop a safe and effective triage system in the emergency department. This is a worthy objective and the simple approach contributes to the success of the book. This book is intended for individuals responsible for performing triage. In addition, any manager responsible for the development and implementation of triage procedures should be familiar with the contents. The twenty member Manchester Triage Group is comprised of 11 emergency nurses and nine emergency physicians. Their background and practical experience seems appropriate for this book. Following the introduction of terms, definitions, and methodology, the book presents the decision-making process and strategies of triage. The triage method is then explained, presenting six simple color-coded flow charts for the following discriminators: life threat, pain, hemorrhage, conscious level, temperature, and acuity. A separate chapter is dedicated to the importance of pain assessment as a part of the triage process. Several assessment skills and tools are described before the final chapter presents 52 separate triage flow charts for various presenting complaints. References are not provided in this book and there are no illustrations except for the flow charts. This is a practical and easy book to follow. Realizing that it is a British publication, there are numerous terms and spelling variations to which the reader must becomeaccustomed. The book provides the essential information to develop effective triage procedures and apply them to various patients. Following these examples, emergency departments can adopt these flow charts or easily modify them for specific departmental variations. The book is a useful educational resource and handy reference for new as well as experienced triage practitioners.
