Description: Part of the Requisites series of diagnostic imaging books, this one focuses on the acute care setting and provides a multimodality, multisystem approach to radiology. It also includes access to an online version as well as easily downloaded ebook that features cross-linked pages, references, and easy navigation.
Purpose: As a second edition, the purpose is to update the continuously evolving field of emergency radiology. It includes updates in imaging protocols such as CT angiography and describes the increasing importance of MR in diagnosing emergent conditions. It presents core concepts in emergency radiology in a succinct and systematic manner, creating a high-yield book that is an excellent foundation for any educational endeavor. As with other books in the series, this one is not meant to be an exhaustive reference, but a presentation of the fundamental building blocks of information that are at the very core of radiologic diagnosis.
Audience: The authors identify both residents in training and general radiologists in practice as their primary audience. However, the imaging and their correlates in this book are detailed enough to benefit the most experienced radiologists, trauma surgeons, and interested clinicians with a useful refresher. By providing a multimodality and multisystem review of commonly encountered acute and emergent conditions, the authors succeed in imparting adequate yet concise information to all these groups. The authors are experienced and highly respected radiologists and educators.
Features: The book contains over 900 labeled images of a variety of modalities including x-ray, fluoroscopy, ultrasound CT, MRI, CTA, MRA, and digital subtraction angiography. Three-dimensional reconstructions and anatomic images are provided to elucidate structures that are not readily evident on imaging. The chapters are concise and text is kept to a minimum. Tables, drawings, and charts are used where applicable. Topics covered include traumatic as well as nontraumatic emergent conditions. This is a fairly comprehensive book on the topic, but it is also concise enough to be a valuable resource. Superlative image quality further adds to the book's value.
Assessment: This book covers a wide range of conditions spanning the traumatic as well as nontraumatic spectrum of emergent diagnoses. This is an essential and quick read for radiology residents in training and a reference for practicing clinicians across various specialties. The superlative image quality and painstaking labeling of each image reduces the need for text and convey key concepts in a visually appealing manner. The most outstanding feature of the book is its concise and easy to understand presentation. This should certainly be part of the required reading for every medical student and resident with an interest in radiologic diagnosis. Its manageable size and high-yield concepts make a requisite for a radiology resident training to take ER call.
