Description: This is an update of a 2000 book of precise recommendations for diagnosis (with differential diagnoses), prognosis, and treatment for the most common emergency situations in small animals.
Purpose: The purpose is to provide veterinarians with needed information quickly when confronted with a seriously ill, injured, or poisoned patient. While several books offer this kind of information, the goal of this one is to give the most up-to-date recommendations for diagnostic and treatment protocols for common situations. It is nice to have a concise reference on hand with this type of information.
Audience: The author states that this book is intended for those in internships, general practice, or emergency and critical care. However, the level of information may be too advanced for the general practitioner as some of the diagnostics and treatment options may require equipment that is not readily available in a general practice setting. In addition, the book introduces complicated concepts that, while important to case management, may only be of interest to emergency and critical care specialists. The author is well known in the field.
Features: The book begins with the basics of supportive care in the critical patient, including oxygen and fluid therapy, as well as the basics of blood transfusion. It reviews types of shock, with diagnostic work-ups and appropriate treatments. Then, it presents the most common emergencies grouped according to the affected body system (cardiac, respiratory, gastrointestinal, reproductive, etc). The book ends with a section on emergencies in exotic species, which is a relatively unique feature compared to others in this category. The treatment options the book discusses are varied and include many options depending on what is available at the clinic. The appendixes offer a concise overview of commonly used equations and medications as well as guidelines for transfusions and a complete review of commonly encountered toxic plants. Overall, the book appears complete, but it can be difficult to use as a quick reference guide as intended. The numbered format in which the information is presented is helpful, but sometimes the information is presented in paragraph form that can take a minute to read and digest (which can be hard to do in an emergency situation). Bulleted lists would be nice.
Assessment: Overall, this is a nice book to have as a reference. It is updated and has better images than the previous version, and the color-coded pages are helpful when using it as a quick reference. It includes a great deal of information that sometimes is a detriment to "quickness."

This book is a quick reference with easily accessible information on emergency procedures. The structure is unique in that it consists of problems divided into diagnosis, prognosis, and step-by-step treatment. Although this is a first edition, it is actually an updated version of Standard Protocols of the Emergency Animal Clinic Ltd., which had three editions beginning in 1987. The purpose is to be a concise, readily accessible source for evaluation, diagnosis, and treatment of critically ill and severely traumatized patients. Such a source is crucial during emergencies because of the lack of time to research problems. The book meets its objectives very well. The book was intended to be a reference for busy emergency veterinarians. It is also convenient for general practitioners or students of veterinary medicine who receive the occasional emergency. The author is the chief of staff of a busy seven-veterinarian emergency practice in Phoenix. The illustrations are excellent. They are very helpful and appropriately distributed. The references are current up to 1992 and appear to include most of the well-known texts and many recent journals. The overall appearance and design of the book are very well done. Unique and helpful features include the avian and exotic section and the appendixes (analgesics, blood cross-matching, and fluid therapy). The book is excellent. I already use it daily when I am on emergency duty. I recommend it be carried and sold. It is worth replacing Standard Protocols of the Emergency Animal Clinic, Ltd., because this book is updated and expanded.
