Description: This is a carefully edited and carefully written multiauthored book on the treatment of neurological emergencies in the emergency room..
Purpose: This book seeks to educate emergency room physicians on the correct diagnosis and treatment of neurological problems in the emergency room.
Audience: The book is clearly aimed at emergency room physicians. Most of the writing has been done by experts in emergency medicine rather than neurology. The writing style is clear and direct. The book will provide much valuable information to ER physicians. Most neurologists will consider the material too elementary for mid-level or advanced career neurologists.
Features: The book is nicely organized into sections on the neurological exam and testing, common neurological presentations, specific neurological conditions, neurological trauma, and pediatric neurological emergencies. The drawings are excellent and the writing is terse and clear. This is a highly readable book. It is carefully focused on what to do about the patient who comes to the ER with a neurological complaint or illness before the neurologist or neurosurgeon arrives.
Assessment: This is a very good book and one that any ER physician can read with both pleasure and benefit. The advice is solid and reasonable. The organization of the book and the chapters is admirable. Each chapter ends with a instructive "Pearls and Pitfalls" section that carefully delineates the most important "take-home" points.
