Description: This is an update of a question-and-answer style review book with 500 USMLE/NBME-type questions and detailed explanations for both right and wrong answers. This edition has more pictures and ECG tracings than the 2012 edition.
Purpose: This is intended as a tool for assessing and improving student and clinician knowledge of emergency medicine. With the increasing interest in emergency medicine in medical school, and more and more residencies requiring emergency medicine rotations for residents, a compact and handy assessment tool like this is valuable.
Audience: The intended audience is medical students, as well as residents and general practitioners. It would be useful for students as a general introduction and self-assessment in emergency medicine, and would be likely to be helpful for preparation for NBME or other clerkship examinations. For residents or practitioners with limited knowledge of emergency medicine, it might have some utility, but the scope is limited and it is not comprehensive. The authors are well regarded in the emergency medicine community, and Adam Rosh is behind the Rosh Review, one of the most used board review programs for emergency medicine residents.
Features: The book hits the big picture topics that students or residents doing rotations would most likely see in the emergency department. The book is divided into complaint-based chapters, addressing major, but definitely not all, presentations typically seen in emergency departments. The scope is appropriately broad, including chest pain and shortness of breath as well as pediatric concerns and vaginal bleeding.
Assessment: This would be a useful resource for medical or physician assistant students interested in emergency medicine, or rotating residents who may not be entirely familiar with the emergency management of acutely ill patients. The book is small enough to fit easily in a bag or white coat pocket and the Q & A style questions make it easy to use when readers have a few minutes here and there, but not enough time for a classic study session. This book is similar in format to other review books, but with more extensive descriptions of right and wrong answers. This edition is more compact and has incorporated more ECGs and radiographs. My only complaint is that the pictures are in black and white, although the quality is generally good enough to appreciate any pathology.
