Description: This is a comprehensive presentation of review material for emergency medicine board exams that uniquely targets visual learners.
Purpose: This approach is a worthy one, as not everyone learns the same way. The book may not be "needed," but it definitely adds to the repertoire of review materials, and in a unique way.
Audience: The audience practitioners/residents who are studying for emergency medicine boards, specifically those who are more visually oriented learners
Features: The book uses a systems-based approach to emergency medicine board review, which is consistent with other materials. The best aspect of the book is its visuals. There are key visual anchors that help in remembering key words/topics. The review questions at the end of each chapter serve help increase retention. The only possible shortcoming is the flow of the pictures at times. A good example is the Epley maneuver, which did not include arrows or other indicators for visual cues about the direction the pictures were supposed to be read.
Assessment: This is a great adjunct that adds a new modality to the review books that already exist. It is unique and will definitely be something I reach for during my board review as I prepare. Pictures tend to stick better with esoteric subjects/anecdotes and likely will help me remember this information better.
