Overview

Advent is a season of memory and hope in which we prepare ourselves to celebrate Jesus' birth and eventual return. During this season we take stock of the darkness in our lives and our world so that we may more fully welcome the light of God at Christmas. Embrace the Coming Light follows four figures from the Gospel of Matthew's account of Jesus' birth: Herod, Joseph, the wise men, and John the Baptist. Readers take a journey that begins in darkness and isolation and ends in light and community. Each week includes a variety of ways to engage Scripture (inductive Bible study, imaginative reading, and lectio divina), a psalm, and writings from other Christians. Embrace the Coming Light also guides readers through a weekly spiritual discipline (a social media fast, solitude, generosity, and adoration) to help deepen the experience of Advent. The devotional has 28 days of readings and prayers and can be used with minor adjustments for Advent in any year.

About the Author

Eddy Ekmekji was born in Baghdad, Iraq, to Armenian parents, spent a part of his childhood in Beirut Lebanon, and immigrated to the United States (California) in 1986 at the age of 10. In high school, he came to deeper faith at his local church that motivated him to continue to grow in his own discipleship. He went to college at UC Davis, where he got involved and eventually joined the staff team of InterVarsity Christian Fellowship. Since 1998, he's been serving on college campuses as a campus minister. He and his wife and three children live in Los Angeles where he directs the ministry to Black Students. He received his Master of Arts from Fuller Theological Seminary. He blogs at Serving Bread (servingbread.com).

Tyler Watson is a native Californian. He is a stay-at-home dad living in the Bay Area of northern California with his wife and son. Prior to his current vocation he served as a pastor in congregations of the Evangelical Covenant Church. He received his Master of Divinity from Fuller Theological Seminary. He blogs at The Space Between My Ears (spacebetweenmyears.com).

Eddy and Tyler became friends as students at UC Davis in 1998, where they learned to follow God, ministered together, and traveled to China as part of a cultural-language exchange program. They remain good friends.
