Overview

This book is a fact based fiction. The characters are real as are the battles and devestation created in Vernon County, Mo. during the Civil War. Ella Mayfield was one member in a family that was considered heros for their efforts to ride the area of Jawhawkers and Union soldiers. All the homesteaders wanted was to live in peace and farm their homesteads. They didn't care about slaverly, but when pressed to fight they sided with the Confederacy.
Ella Mayfield was strong willed and independent. She feared for her widowed mother and siblings and rightly so, because she lost many of her family members in battle. Ella was a crack shot and a superb horsewoman which won the respect of the men in her band. Her exploits as a bushwhacker and spy are ledgendary.

About the Author

Fay Risner was always facinated by her father's tales of what life in his home town, Montevallo, Mo., had been like during the Civil War. When she found the stories of the Mayfield family, she thought it was one that needed to be told. We read so many books about battles but there isn't much on the market about what happened to citiens caught in the middle of this war between the Union and Confederate soldiers. The only bushwahckers most of us remember are the James and Younger brothers, the ones that became outlaws.
