This is an excellent new book on electrodiagnostic medicine that incorporates the contributions of experts from multiple academic centers across the United States. The purpose is to provide a comprehensive work on electrodiagnostic medicine for both novices and experienced practitioners. This goal is achieved. Essentials of neurophysiology, pathophysiology, techniques, and interpretation of electrodiagnostic findings are presented in a lucid manner. More importantly, the book reinforces the concept that the electromyographer's thought processes are as important as the physical performance of the examination -- this is not another how to book. Targeted for both beginners and seasoned electrodiagnosticians, this book will be useful as a major reference text for many laboratories. Although the book's expansiveness may initially intimidate the beginner, its logical organization and clarity of style make it extremely user friendly. The authors and contributors are all recognized authorities in their respective areas. The book includes clear illustrations and useful tables and is well referenced. A particularly useful feature for beginners is the chapter that includes the AAEM Glossary of Terms in Clinical Electromyography and illustrations of selected waveforms. The sections on instrumentation and how to approach the electrodiagnostic consultation should be required reading for all trainees. This is a valuable book for teachers and students of electrodiagnostic medicine. It serves both as a reservoir of basic information and a ready reference for more advanced techniques. This book will be an important addition to the electromyographer's library.
