Changes we are experiencing in society seem to be unprecedented. But are they? Does ancient wisdom literature have any validity for us? In Ecclesiastes, King Solomon begins the narrative with "Vanity of vanities, all is vanity", and he closes with "Vanity of vanities, all is vanity." Between these bookends, he stirs up a lot of dust and asks important questions about our relevance. The path is both troubling and intriguing.

About the Author

My name is Stefan Olaf (SO) Journer and I was born and raised in a rural General Conference Mennonite community established by German immigrants in 1876. Early life was steeped in conservative teaching on the Christian Fundamentals including verbal inspiration of scripture. While my career path led me away from the community, the spiritual background has been more difficult to abandon. My struggles reconciling theology with practicality, led to an intrigue of the Wisdom Literature of the Old Testament and Ecclesiastes in particular for therein we find a strong attempt to define the true meaning of life.
