East Africa and its Big Game is a sportsman's reliving of his adventures hunting in Africa, including stories of hairbreadth escapes and the challenges of an up-country journey. He gives vivid descriptions of some of the different tribes inhabiting this portion of Africa.

The author was accompanied by Sir Robert Harvey, his brother C. B. Harvey, and H. C. V. Hunter; and these men engaged the tried leader, Martin, a Maltese, who was so successful in the conduct of Joseph Thomson's explorations.

Captain Willoughby arrived at Zanzibar on November 28, 1886, and left Mombasa for England on May 1, 1887. He penetrated as far as Kilima-njaro

His six months in Africa resulted in conquests totaling about 350 head. These included 66 rhinoceros, 40 Granti, 39 hartebeest, 39 Mpallah, 21 buffalo, and numbers of elephants, lions, leopards, giraffes, hippopotami.
