Readers learn all about money, its origins (Learn About Money explains that in 1200 BC cowry shells were used as coins in China), and receive a basic explanation of how to save money. They gain an understanding about different jobs people do for income, including children who receive an allowance or are paid to help neighbors. The text moves very fluidly from concept to concept. Readers will see themselves in the multicultural kids featured on these pages: raking leaves, counting pennies, window-shopping. The photographs are not the usual bland stock image but rather are refreshing in their ability to capture true emotion. VERDICT A solid foundation for financial literacy curricula.
