Presents presents a critical edition of compositions of three early Jewish poets from the Balkans who flourished in the 11th-12-th centuries: Moses b. Hiyya, Joseph b. Jacob Qalai and Isaac b. Judah. Their piyyutim can be found in 13th-15th-century manuscripts and 16th-century printed editions of the Mahzor Romania as well as in the Genizah collection. Appended are several compositions by Shabbetai ben Mordecai (13th century) and Abraham Gohen ben Marino (Corfu, 12th century).

About the Author

Prior to his retirement in 1999, Leon Weinberger served as University Research Professor from 1984-1999 at The University of Alabama, having joined the Department of Religious Studies in 1964. During his career, Prof. Weinberger published twelve books, edited thirty-eight more, wrote more than ninety articles and book reviews in both English and Hebrew, and delivered twenty papers at conferences throughout the United States and Israel. Since his retirement, he has written a critical edition and commentary entitled Jewish Poet in Muslim Egypt.
