Description: This is a compilation of presentations from a multinational and multidisciplinary meeting of pediatric specialists, albeit mostly spine surgeons, in Oxford in 2011. The focus is on the diagnosis and appropriate treatment of young patients with early onset scoliosis as well as how treatment may affect the growing child. It also describes different treatment modalities in different parts of the world.
Purpose: The purpose is to present the latest thinking on early onset scoliosis. The book is intended to help readers develop an understanding of what early onset scoliosis is and focus on principles that will guide the most appropriate overall treatment, rather than just on specific treatment modalities. This book meets these worthy objectives by presenting a worldwide experience in treating a wide variety of etiologies from many viewpoints without shying away from differing opinions.
Audience: The audience is any practitioner of the healing arts who cares for young children that have or may develop scoliosis at a very young age. This would particularly apply to geneticists, pediatricians, pediatric pulmonologists, pediatric orthopedists, and pediatric anesthesiologists. It continues with the treatment of early onset scoliosis found in different syndromes as well as in neuromuscular patients. Of particular interest is a section on experiences in treating patients with early onset scoliosis from many different cultural backgrounds around the world. Finally, the book takes a look at what needs to be done in the future to optimally treat these very young patients.
Assessment: This is a must-have for anyone who wishes to be involved in the treatment of children who have or are at risk to have early onset scoliosis.
