Στην ιστορία της Ευρώπης, ο Μεσαίωνας (ή μεσαιωνική περίοδος) διήρκεσε από τον 5ο έως τον 15ο αιώνα. Ξεκίνησε με την πτώση της Δυτικής Ρωμαϊκής Αυτοκρατορίας και συγχωνεύθηκε στην Αναγέννηση και την Εποχή της Ανακάλυψης. Ο Μεσαίωνας είναι η μεσαία περίοδος των τριών παραδοσιακών διαιρέσεων της δυτικής ιστορίας: η κλασική αρχαιότητα, η μεσαιωνική περίοδος και η σύγχρονη περίοδος. Σε αυτή τη μακρά περίοδο χίλια χρόνια υπήρχαν όλα τα είδη γεγονότων και διεργασιών που ήταν πολύ διαφορετικά μεταξύ τους, χρονικά και γεωγραφικά διαφοροποιημένα, ανταποκρινόμενα τόσο στις αμοιβαίες επιρροές με άλλους πολιτισμούς και χώρους όσο και στην εσωτερική δυναμική. Πολλοί από αυτούς είχαν μια μεγάλη προβολή προς το μέλλον, μεταξύ άλλων εκείνες που έθεσαν τα θεμέλια της ανάπτυξης της επακόλουθης ευρωπαϊκής επέκτασης και της ανάπτυξης κοινωνικών παραγόντων που ανέπτυξαν μια κοινωνία βασισμένη κυρίως στην ύπαιθρο, αλλά είδαν τη γέννηση μιας αρχής αστικής ζωής και μια μπουρζουαζία που τελικά θα αναπτύξει τον καπιταλισμό.
