Q: What's the main idea behind the Ironkin Chronicles?
A: One of the motifs I like working with is succeeding despite normalcy. Rowan is not a superhero, his main trait is self belief. Like you or me he has moments of self doubt, but he works through them. He's very human... for a dwarf.
Q: That sounds like a powerful theme, surprising that you say he's normal.
A: Normal, absolutely; again, for a dwarf. I feel it makes him more relatable. I love characters like Legolas from Lord of the Rings, but I find it hard to relate when characters seem so perfect. Rowan does become more powerful with time, but it's earned through his journey.
Q: What makes this book, Dwarven Gold, different from other titles out there?
A: This tale is very action packed, especially as it progresses, but it provides enough context for the action to matter and make sense. I like to keep the reader guessing, just when you think you have things figured out they take a turn... or will take a turn eventually. When I read, if the language is too detailed and flowery... I find myself distracted. I try to find a balance between description, and trusting the reader's imagination to paint the scene.
I love reading fiction such as R.A. Salvatore novels, I draw plenty of inspiration from his style of presenting action in these tales.
Sorry, a bit of a tangent. What excites me most about this series, and what I feel is different, is the progression you'll see not only in Rowan's abilities, gear, riches, and aspirations; but how he gains perspective on the world around him.
Q: Will we see any love interests?
A: Tale #1 really sets the stage for quite a few things, but like all good things it'll take some time to grow. :)
Q: If someone hasn't read one of your previous titles, can they read this and not get lost?
A: Absolutely. My books try not to get buried in prose, titles, descriptions, and so on. I like being clear, and straight to the point. From a plot standpoint, since this is Tale #1 there's no better place to start!
Q: What are you excited about for future titles?
A: Tale #2 is on the way with some serious surprises for the readers, it builds on Tale #1 really diving into more of the tension and development of Rowan as a character and how he works with those around him.
Q: Anything you would like to say to your fans?
A: As an independent author, I live and die (almost literally ha) by the reviews left on my books. I am so appreciative of those who take the time to leave reviews. When readers are as invested in these characters as I am, there's no better feeling.
Their passion for the tales is the best advertising I'm able to get. Their reviews truly do matter! They keep more tales coming, coffee in my mug, and the house from freezing in the winter. :)
Q: You're a composer as well, will there be a themed soundtrack for this series?
A: I certainly plan on it. It comes down largely to how the title is received, and if the readers would actually want it. I want to make sure I'm putting them first on where I commit my time. That being said, music done right really brings a world to life----so time permitting we'll see what happens.
Q: I'm really curious about the battles, you hinted at some pretty epic fights?
A: Yes! Climactic and tension filled, I'm very happy with how some of the scenes played out. I feel readers will enjoy them immensely.
