Overview

Ron Bonk's The Vicious Sweet stars Sasha Graham as Tyler Phenix, a popular cult actress who seems to have the world at her feet, but continually makes bad decisions preventing her career from advancing. As she is about to commit suicide, she is abducted by someone in her house and passes out, awakening chained to a bed. Tyler is the prisoner of a mysterious man called Grimaldi, who says that his purpose is to teach her all that she has forgotten. Using projected films, masks, and other unsavory devices, Grimaldi asks Tyler intimate questions about her unpleasant past, punishing her when she gives an answer which he considers to be untrue. In between sessions, he drugs her so she will sleep. As the days progress, Tyler becomes more honest, revealing her past and slipping into a strange sort of trance filled with frightening hallucinations. When she wakes up, she learns some terrifying facts about herself, Grimaldi, and her captivity.

Ron Bonk directed this entertaining and absorbing low-budget thriller which rises above its inherent problems (shot-on-video look, etc.) due to a pair of seemingly obvious assets which are nonetheless often overlooked by horror films costing 100 times as much: an interesting story line and real acting from the lead performer. In this case, that performer is a talented young actress named Sasha Graham, who has already established herself as a leading genre presence. Graham is terrific in a very difficult role, and if she doesn't go places after this, there's something wrong with the movie business. Granted, the technical level of this film is atrocious, despite the usual logrolling fan-boy praise on the video box (most of the writers quoted are thanked in the end credits). But if patient viewers can overlook the numerous technical shortcomings in favor of gripping suspense and Graham's striking performance, they will find The Vicious Sweet a pleasant and genuinely frightening surprise.
