Overview

The story involves a pair of nightclub owners and the problems inherent in their mounting The Big Show. Victoria Cassel Martha Vickers agrees to help out. The 1929 Warners film titled The Time, the Place and the Girl bears no relation to this 1946 confection.

If The Time, the Place and the Girl had a funnier screenplay, it might have been a rival to the Hope-Crosby pairings it seeks to emulate, rather than what it is: an entertaining but basically unexceptional little musical comedy. Certainly stars Dennis Morgan and Jack Carson can't quite compete with Crosby and Hope, but on their own terms they were a perfectly enjoyable team. Morgan is in particularly fine voice in this outing, and Carson, who can become very annoying in the wrong hands, is actually quite engaging here. It also helps that the delectable Martha Vickers and the brassy Janis Paige are on hand, making the proceedings that much more enjoyable. And the nifty Arthur Schwartz-Leo Robin score deserves a round of applause all its own, especially the Oscar-nominated " Oh But I Do," as well as the equally worthy "A Gal in Calico." Regrettably, the "Solid Citizen" number is saddled with an objectionable blackface treatment, but the song itself has a pleasing melody. The staging of the numbers is generally sprightly, with the "cow" song strange but memorable.
