Esteemed Polish composer Henryk Górecki's Symphony No. 3 (The Symphony of Sorrowful Songs) was written in 1976 as a requiem for those who perished in the Holocaust and was inspired by the theme of loss between parent and child. This insightful documentary by Tony Palmer traces Górecki's path from suppressed avant-gardist in Communist Poland to celebrated national treasure and includes a September 1992 performance of the indelible symphony by the London Sinfonietta, directed by David Zinman and sung by soprano Dawn Upshaw.
