In 1977, Canada was introduced to the bizarre 30-minute sketch comedy series Second City TV, or SCTV, and its talented cast of comedians. The original series aired in the U.S. via syndication until NBC offered the talented troupe a 90-minute late-night time slot. With the chance to improve upon their classic sketches, the newly titled SCTV Network 90 began production in August 1981. This box set continues where SCTV Network 90 Vol. 1 left off, offering nine more episodes of Network 90's 1981-82 season. Show stars John Candy, Catherine O'Hara, Joe Flaherty, Eugene Levy, Rick Moranis, Dave Thomas, and Andrea Martin use the expanded series format to their advantage, adding to their repertoire such new favorites as Candy's Russian TV show "Hey Giorgy!" There's a great sci-fi spoof, "Zontar," wherein heads of cabbage invade. And there's also a hysterical SCTV adaptation of The Godfather, with Guy Caballero (Flaherty) as the Don. This set also boasts an impressive amount of special features, which include everything from photo sessions, interviews, and still galleries to commentaries, musical performances, and the SCTV cast at the 1982 Emmy Awards. Similar to the early years of Saturday Night Live and cousin to the outrageous Monty Python, SCTV made its indelible mark on TV comedy by being inventive, original, and, most of all, funny.
