Overview

Hired, Part 2, a short film, enlightens Joel and the robots on the joys of car sales, frightens them with primitive clock-motion wipes, and prepares them for the dark, demonic drama Manos, the Hands of Fate (which is later referenced in Mystery Science Theater 3000: The Movie). Using the opening footage as a backdrop, the guys pretend to go for a drive. As Manos progresses to reveal evil creatures, the scientists continue their attempts at manipulation, with Frank breaking into Capra dialogue. Mike Nelson makes a cameo when Joel, Tom Servo, and Crow discuss the scariest possible features of monsters, as inspired by the giant kneecaps of Manos character Torgo.

Preceded by the notably hilarious mockery of a short called Hired, Pt. 2, the print itself of Manos, the Hands of Fate has enough glitches to warrant absurdist deconstruction by wisecracking Joel and robot friends. Supplemented by the underdeveloped plot lines, poorly designed set and costumes, and far-out character depictions, Manos provides the guys on the Satellite of Love opportunities to insert numerous amusing implications from homoeroticism to ironic children's dialogue. Although the anticlimactic ending slows witticism towards the film's close, intelligent jokes fly freely throughout the majority of the film, turning Manos from a catastrophic film experiment into a successful exercise in delirious abandon.
