Overview

"When the Manchu dynasty employs the Master of the Flying Guillotine (Kam Kong) in hopes of quelling the resistance stirring within than Han people (their dynasty had recently been overtaken) the Master accepts, oblivious to the challenges that could impede him. Before long, a fighting tournament is announced, and the participants include the One Armed Boxer, who was responsible for killing two of the Master's disciples. The Master is certain he can down his newfound opponent by means of the Flying Guillotine (which entails hurling through the air at such a velocity that the victim is decapitated on contact), but the One Armed Boxer proves a challenging fighter himself. The film also features Jimmy Wang Yu and Lung Kun Yee."

A rare martial arts film that manages to keep the audience entertained with both fight sequences and plot, Master of the Flying Guillotine also features an ice-cool attitude that makes it an incredible joy to watch. Viewers know they are in for a good time when in the film's first five minutes a blind old man with an insanely long white beard ruthlessly decapitates a chicken with his flying guillotine weapon. The outrageous fun continues as the movie then jumps to a massive martial arts tournament where we get to see a kung fu fighter whose arms extend out several feet in front of him. The special effects are cheesy, the plot is more than a little lean, and the acting can be a bit stilted at times, but none of that ever matters in a raw-powered martial arts gem like this. Writer, director, and star Jimmy Wang Yu's Master of the Flying Guillotine is a rapid-fire thrill ride for all lovers of action-packed, blood-filled kung fu cinema.
