Greta achieves that unsettling, nervous feeling you get when you believe you are being followed. Director and co-writer Neil Jordan captures a single feeling, and amps it up during the majority of the film. There is rarely a comfortable moment in Greta, as the film demands the audience to keep looking, even if the suspense is too much to bear. Isabelle Huppert and Chloë Grace Moretz nail the creepy chemistry, which drives much of the tension in the film. Only hampered by some questionable story and design choices, Greta is an impressive stalker movie that is not for the faint of heart. Frances McCullen (Chloë Grace Moretz), is a waitress living in New York. One night on the subway she comes across a purse, and as the good-hearted woman that she is, decides to return the purse to its rightful owner, Greta Hideg (Isabelle Huppert). Frances gets close to Greta, as Frances has lost her mother and craves a similar presence in her life. One night, as the new friends make dinner, Frances stumbles upon a cabinet full of bags that Greta has planted across New York. Feeling that something is off, Frances enlists the help of her roommate, Erica (Maika Monroe), to fend off Greta and her unorthodox methods of "keeping in touch." Moretz and Huppert do an impressive job of conveying their emotions. When Frances discovers the bags, you can feel the overwhelming sense of dread that she felt in that moment. Greta is eerie and distressing, constantly giving the audience a reason to cover their eyes. Where Greta falters is in its ambitious design and irritating character choices. Jordan is inconsistent in his direction, he is able to harness the suspense but fails to fluently piece each scene together. To his credit, Jordan uses the camera and lighting to his advantage, continuously creating tension in scenes that otherwise would not have any. It is difficult to watch this poor girl being stalked across New York with no one doing anything to help her. Frances contacts the police, they brush it off. Greta consistently attends the restaurant where Frances works, and the management tells their terrified employee to "deal with it, and don't make a scene." All of this seems normal compared to the advice Frances receives from her roommate later on in the film. While Greta is a terrifying stalker, she is aided by questionable and convenient plot choices that are too egregious to ignore. When it is all said and done, Greta is an impressive exploration of what it feels like to be followed and terrorized on a daily basis. The film will keep you on the edge of your seat until the absolute end, while only providing a few moments of relief throughout. The story can get a little ridiculous, and it makes you want to scream, but in the end, Greta is a successful stalker flick that should be viewed.
