Overview

Michael Winterbottom teams up again with screenwriter Frank Cottrell Boyce for 24 Hour Party People, a film that tells the story of the music scene in Manchester, England, from the late '70s through the '80s. British television star Steve Coogan portrays real-life music figure Tony Wilson, who founded Factory Records. After seeing and hearing the Sex Pistols, Wilson begins talking up punk on his program and booking live shows. As he moves onto legendary bands Joy Division and New Order, his power and influence grow. A drug-fueled decline follows soon after he opens the Hacienda, a popular club. Shot by Robby M?ller on digital video, 24 Hour Party People was screened in competition at the 2002 Cannes Film Festival.
