Overview

Mike Nolan (Darren McGavin) is a Beverly Hills resident whose divorce case -- blown by a hopelessly inept, possibly larcenous attorney (Dick Martin) -- has left him with no home, no job, and no assets, except for his car. And when the car is driven off by 16-year-old repo agent "Larry" (Denise Nickerson), Mike gives chase and finds himself hired by the brassy owner (Sylvia Miles) of the auto repossession company the girl works for. He and Larry are teamed together to go after a car being driven by luscious deadbeat Gloria Martine (Joan Collins), but before long Mike is up to his neck in trouble, not only fending off unwanted advances from Larry but trying for some extracurricular activity with Gloria. And that's not even taking into account the hoods, motorcyclists, and other irate citizens that he runs afoul of in his new "career."

Only in the free and easy late 1970's could someone produce a comedy that depicted romantic advances between a middle-aged man and a 16-year-old heroine, and not expect to get hammered by censors and pundits -- or perhaps they did expect it, which was why Zero To Sixty didn't make it out to theaters, and was, near as one can tell, a direct-to-video feature film. It isn't much of a movie, but it didn't set out to be one, either -- just a breezy action-comedy of the road with some awkward sexual tension; think of a 90-minute episode of CHiPs. And in its breezy way it is a pop-culture trip almost as beguiling in its cheesy way as a good episode of That 70's Show, what with the Hudson Brothers (augmented with Vito Scotti, no less) doing their Three Stooges schtick. And action movie buffs will appreciate the presence of Bud Ekins, the renowned stunt driver and champion motorcycle racer, among other top talent in that area -- and to top it off, you get a pre-Dynasty Joan Collins doing a dry run for the high-class slut persona that she would all-but-own in the first half of the decade that followed. It's low-rent fun with a veneer of nostalgia, moved forward at a good clip by director Don Weis (The Affairs of Dobie Gillis, I Love Melvin). Darren McGavin looks uncomfortable trying to do broad comedy, and almost everyone here who is recognizable seems to be working under the correct impression that they'd seen better days -- all but the Hudson Brothers, who go with the flow in their scenes. But it all moves so fast that one hardly has the time to object to any of it.
