Overview

Rob Reiner's romantic comedy When Harry Met Sally stars Billy Crystal and Meg Ryan as the title pair. The film opens with the two strangers, both newly graduated from the University of Chicago, share a car trip from Chicago to New York, where they are both going to make their way. During the trip, they discuss aspects of their characters and their lives, eventually deciding it is impossible for men and women to be "just friends." They arrive in New York and go their separate ways. They meet a few years later on an airplane and Harry reveals he is married. They meet again at a bookstore a few years after that where Harry reveals he is now divorced. From that point on, the two form a friendship. Eventually their closeness results in their respective best friends (played by Carrie Fisher and Bruno Kirby) meeting and falling in love with each other. At a New Year's Eve party Harry and Sally confront the complex tangle of emotions they feel for each other. The soundtrack consists primarily of Harry Connick Jr. crooning standards like "It Had to Be You."

Usually the passage of many years -- even decades -- is required before a popular film achieves the designation of "classic," but Rob Reiner's charming and witty romantic comedy attained that lofty status much sooner than most. Certainly it's best remembered for the hilarious scene, set in a New York delicatessen, in which preternaturally perky Meg Ryan loudly simulates an orgasm for skeptical Billy Crystal -- much to the amusement of a nearby female patron (played by Reiner's mother), who instructs the waiter, "I'll have what she's having!" That's just one great line among many penned by Nora Ephron, whose episodic plot initially introduces Crystal and Ryan as friends who vow to resist sexual attraction to preserve the nature of their unique relationship. The story spans many years and even evokes suspense by delaying what many viewers believe should be inevitable. Will they or won't they? The sparkling script, airy direction, irresistibly cute characters, and New York settings jell perfectly, making When Harry Met Sally one of contemporary cinema's funniest romantic gems. The new wide-screen Special Edition DVD includes seven minutes of never-before-seen footage, commentary by Reiner, Ephron, Crystal, and Carrie Fisher, the original theatrical trailer, and a music video by Harry Connick, Jr.

Barnes & Noble - Ed Hulse

Screenwriter Nora Ephron has constructed an incisive tale that, despite its tendency toward whimsy and cuteness, manages to combine brilliant zingers with deep, lasting reflections on relationships. Director Rob Reiner encourages top-notch performances from his ideal cast. All four of the leads devour their meaty roles with aplomb, though Meg Ryan is a revelation; her winsome cheeriness and comic timing had never been highlighted so well. Carrie Fisher and Bruno Kirby, perpetual character actors, are given ample opportunities to shine and both do. The sappy ending is of a piece with Ephron's other work, but it's a small flaw in the grand scheme of this charming picture, set eloquently to the music of Harry Connick Jr. Kudos as well to cinematographer Barry Sonnenfeld, who offers a picturesque New York to make Gotham dwellers proud.
