"Warner Bros.' feature-filled, double-disc Special Edition DVD of the Clint Eastwood Western Unforgiven illustrates the evolution of the DVD. When first issued, the DVD of this multiple-Oscar-winning film of 1992 was a bare bones affair, with no special features or documentaries beyond picture and sound quality. But now the knowledge that DVD popularity is greatly enhanced by extra features has prompted many reissues, such as this two-disk Special Edition. The first disk contains the film in a stunningly beautiful letterbox widescreen version that preserves the aspect ratio of the original film, and a Dolby Digital 5.1 Surround sound soundtrack that puts the range in home on the range. Disk one also contains an insightful movie commentary by film critic and Eastwood biographer Richard Schickel, plus Eastwood film highlights and an awards list for the film. Disk two includes an Unforgiven retrospective ten years later, a ""making of"" feature about the film, a short feature about Eastwood, and a John Cusack-narrated biography of the film's star. But the real gold on the disk is the inclusion of an ancient episode of the popular 1950s TV show Maverick in which an impossibly-young Eastwood starred."
