Overview

This drama follows the attempts of a Scottish lad to marry a pretty Irish lassie and join the police force. The girl's father, a New York policeman who was forcibly retired, is not happy that his daughter desires to marry a highlander. Still, amidst the turmoil, romance ensues.

It's hard to give three cheers for Three Cheers for the Irish, an amiable enough little movie that perhaps deserves one cheer or maybe even two, but simply is too run-of-the-mill to earn a third. Make no mistake about it: those who are enormous fans of St. Patrick's Day will find plenty here to tickle their funny bones (provided they don't mind some pretty blatant stereotyping). But even those so inclined will likely find it all a bit of blarney that doesn't really add up to much -- all potatoes and no meat, as it were. Still, Richard Macaulay and Jerry Wald's screenplay does have a fair amount of funny lines, and even if the conflicts are rather manufactured, they do give the actors situations to play off of and against. And the actors themselves are quite good company. Dennis Morgan, of course, is a handsome actor who knew how to work his charms to good effect and does so here; he also has a nifty way with a comic line when given a chance. Priscilla Lane is also very easy on the eyes, and her lass-next-door appeal is put to very good use. And Thomas Mitchell, of course, was a simply dandy character actor who is right at home in this particular milieu. They help to spark this otherwise-ordinary little picture.
