Overview

PRC/Eagle-Lion's Eddie Dean western series came to an end with The Tioga Kid. Dean plays a dual role, as an upright Texas ranger and a desperate outlaw. The "bad" Dean joins a gang of horse rustlers who've been making life miserable for rancher Jennifer Holt. It's up to the "good" Dean to save Holt's stock and put the villains in the calaboose. Meanwhile, our hero's faithful sidekick Soapy (Roscoe Ates) is never quite sure which Eddie Dean he's speaking to at any given time. Considered a major improvement over Dean's previous films, The Tioga Kid is a worthy farewell for one of filmdom's most prolific but least memorable singing cowboy.

PRC pulled a fast one with this, the last of the studio's Eddie Dean music oaters, which was really recycled footage from Dean's 1946 Driftin' River augmented with new scenes depicting the star as lookalike outlaw "The Tioga Kid." As in the previous film, Dean warbles his own and Johnny Bond's "Way back in Oklahoma" and Lew Porter and Robert Emmett Tansey's "Driftin' River." Tansey had directed the previous film but Ray Taylor, who shot the new footage, earned solo billing for The Tioga Kid. The mix of footage is actually rather seamless and few among the audience probably knew the difference, perhaps only suffering an occasional case of deja vu. Although Jennifer Holt replaced Shirley Patterson as the leading lady, the rest of the cast retained their characters from the original film.
