Eleanor Parker is so beautiful in The Seventh Sin that it sometimes takes the breath away. Parker may not have the charismatic allure and indefinable spark of Greta Garbo, who played this same role in The Painted Veil, but as a sheer study of cinematic beauty, she comes close to being a match. Watching her go through her paces in Sin, one is struck again by the fact that certain individuals have a physical presence that was made for the moving camera. Parker's performance is also quite good, for the woman was actually quite an actress, even if she never achieved the heights of stardom her looks and talent indicate she could. But Parker can't save Sin, a tedious, overwrought and often annoying melodrama that meanders along its rather boring way without making any of the impact it wants to. Not even George Sanders' excellent, wry supporting performance can make this script come to much more than an imitation of life. And Bill Travers' wooden performance is a serious detriment, as is Ronald Neame's by-the-numbers direction. Jean-Pierre Aumont is adequate as Parker's lover, and the film has a nice look. But it's simply too sluggish.
