Michael Mann's muscular adaptation of James Fenimore Cooper's classic novel The Last of the Mohicans comes to DVD with a widescreen anamorphic transfer that preserves the original theatrical aspect ratio of 2.35:1. Closed-captioned English soundtracks are rendered in Dolby Digital 5.1, DTS 5.1, and Dolby Digital Surround, while a French soundtrack has been recorded in Dolby Digital Surround. English and Spanish subtitles are accessible. Although there are no supplemental materials to speak of, the transfer does an exquisite job of presenting this visually breathtaking film.

After making a name for himself as creator of the super-cool, ultra-modern TV series, Miami Vice, Michael Mann turned his talents to this atypical period production: a loose adaptation of James Fenimore Cooper's classic 19th-century novel. Combining lush romanticism with thrilling and brutal action sequences, Last of the Mohicans became one of the biggest critical and commercial successes of Mann's career. The story follows orphaned trapper Hawkeye (Daniel Day-Lewis) and his surrogate Mohawk family as they escort a British officer's daughters through virgin forests, an act that entangles them in the French and Indian War. The production is superb, filled with stirring battle scenes and majestic images of the American wilderness courtesy of veteran cinematographer Dante Spinotti. Day-Lewis and Madeleine Stowe make a glamorous, yet refreshingly adult pair of lovers, and all of the performers bring a sincerity and emotional truth to their roles. The Last of the Mohicans skillfully melds elements of the action, western, war, and romance genres into one gloriously entertaining package.

Challenging and stirring entertainment in a decade that seemed to be out of touch with adventure classics, The Last of the Mohicans was inbued with a newfound sensibility and daring by the gifted Michael Mann. An epic tale remarkably condensed into just under two hours of rock-solid storytelling, Mohicans operates on its own agenda and breaks a few conventions of the genre, but provides ample rewards. The chemistry between leads Daniel Day-Lewis and Madeleine Stowe is smoldering; their romantic tension is palpable in nearly every scene they share, which makes the central historical tale surrounding them even more urgent and pertinent. The director's knack for introducing American audiences to electric new talent is perfectly evident here, especially in the form of Wes Studi, who is positively chilling, and Jodhi May, who creates true vulnerability in a small but vital character. Also notable is the film's relentlessly accurate depiction of violence in battle, with the typically rousing heroes vs. villains archetypes laid to rest in favor of a more potent and hard-hitting illustration. A sole Oscar winner for Best Sound, The Last of the Mohicans was nonetheless hailed by many critics as one of the year's best films.
