The first film written and directed by animé pioneer Hayao Miyazaki (Princess Mononoke), Castle of Cagliostro is a high-spirited adventure that foreshadows the visionary animator's future glories. Based loosely on 19th-century stories by French author Maurice LeBlanc, Cagliostro revolves around the daring escapades of Lupin III, the grandson of a famous French safecracker. As the film begins, young Lupin -- also known as "The Wolf" -- finds himself in the mythical kingdom of Cagliostro. His gallant attempts to rescue a damsel in distress pit this dashing adventurer against a sinister nobleman and eventually lead to the discovery of a long-lost treasure. Miyazaki's directorial enthusiasm is infectious, and even the most hard-hearted viewer will be beguiled by Lupin's feats of derring-do. Castle of Cagliostro, made in 1979, isn't as visually sophisticated as the director's later animated features, but it reveals the strong storytelling sense that characterizes Miyazaki's best films, making it a must for any animation library.
