Overview

He was a poor carpenter who never traveled further than 50 miles from his home and died at the age of 33, but his teachings changed the world and he's still followed by hundreds of millions of people around the world, 2,000 years after his death. Jesus, originally produced as a television mini-series, offers a glimpse of the human side of the messiah, as well as recounting the story of his life and martyrdom. Jeremy Sisto stars as Jesus, with Jacqueline Bisset as Mary, Armin Mueller-Stahl as Joseph, Gary Oldman as Pontius Pilate, and Debra Messing as Mary Magdalene. The home video release is expanded from the broadcast edition, featuring material that was cut for time purposes.

Beautifully shot in Morocco and Malta, the Emmy-nominated miniseries Jesus dramatizes the story of the humble carpenter believed by many to be the biblical Messiah. Jeremy Sisto portrays a Christ very much of this earth -- laughing, dancing, even gracefully fending off his friend Lazarus' marriage-minded daughter. But nowhere is His humanity more evident than in the warm familiarity of mother and son. Mary (Jacqueline Bisset) functions almost as a benevolent stage mom, nudging her laid-back son that "it is time" to fulfill His destiny. This stirring production conveys both the emotional lure of Jesus' compassion and the raw excitement of His miracles -- walking on the surface of a stormy sea, bringing Lazarus back to life -- that inflamed His devoted disciples. The film also shows how this alarmed the existing power structure, leading all too soon to betrayal and agonizing crucifixion at the hands of Roman governor Pontius Pilate, played by a mesmerizing Gary Oldman. Among the script's less effective contemporary touches are Mary and former prostitute Mary Magdalene (a miscast Debra Messing) bonding over the hurtfulness of men. But Jeroen Krabbé is a dazzling Satan in a business suit, tempting Christ with power and chortling at the mayhem to come: "The world at war -- what a concept!" The film ends with Jesus' triumphant resurrection from the dead, inspiring His followers to spread the teachings that have echoed through the centuries.
