"In this legal-thriller based on the novel by John Grisham, several people involved in a court case against a gun manufacturer attempt to manipulate the jury for different reasons. Featuring a film transfer that preserves the original widescreen aspect ratio (a full-creen version was released simultaneously), the DVD for director Gary Fleder's Runaway Jury also allows viewers to select the original English soundtrack in Dolby Digital 5.1 Surround Sound or French and Spanish dubbed Dolby Digital Stereo tracks. Along with English, Spanish, and French subtitles, the disc boasts a number of bonus features. Offering a glimpse into the making of the film, Fleder provides optional feature-length audio commentary, while stars Gene Hackman and Dustin Hoffman lend their voices to shorter scene-specific commentary tracks. For additional behind-the-scenes experiences, five featurettes are included, covering such areas of production as acting, cinematography, and editing. Finally, to see what landed on the cutting room floor, viewers are treated to a selection of deleted scenes that can be played with or without audio commentary by Fleder."

Editorial Reviews

Runaway Jury is a reasonably entertaining film if you don't think about it too much. It offers relatively tight pacing, an impressive cast, and a plot that combines courtroom drama, fights, chases, and assorted cat-and-mouse games. However, you may be disappointed if you're looking for an airtight plot that doesn't strain credulity or leave any loose ends hanging, a serious exploration of the complex issues that are raised in the story, in-depth character development, or any degree of subtlety. This is a heavy-handed potboiler that demonizes the gun industry and offers only limited opportunity for its talented supporting cast to stretch their acting muscles. You do get a chance to see Gene Hackman (in his third John Grisham film adaptation) and Dustin Hoffman in their first film together, John Cusack is a good fit for the lead role, and the story is generally engaging if you don't mind the plot contrivances. But there's a lot of wasted potential in this movie.
