Overview

The lunatic Dr. Krupp again wreaks havoc while trying to defeat the Aztec Mummy in this no-budget Mexican horror film, a sequel to The Aztec Mummy and Curse of the Aztec Mummy. This time around, he invents a tin robot to help battle the Mummy, and a violent showdown ensues.

This loopy but atmospheric melange of cliffhanger, B-horror, and Mexican mythology is one of the best-known in American producer/distributor K. Gordon Murray's vast library of imported, re-edited, and redubbed Mexican fantasy titles. The film played theaters in 1964 or 1965 with another Murray Mexican horror film, The Vampire's Coffin, but most audiences will remember it from numerous late-night television airings. Released in its native country in 1958, The Robot vs. the Aztec Mummy is the third in a series of films featuring Popoca, the Aztec Mummy, and is actually comprised mostly of footage from the previous two films in the series (the little-seen La Momia Azteca and La Maldicion de la Momia Azteca). Special effects -- the clunky robot in particular -- are definitely on par with movie technology from two decades earlier, and Murray's slapdash dubbing won't help elevate this film past the level of inoffensive junk in the minds of most viewers. However, more open-minded horror fans will enjoy its earnest attempt to compete with the Universal mummy series, and the many serial-style flourishes, especially its masked villain, the Bat. Beverly Wilshire released the film as a full-screen DVD, which is now out of print; however, it's a staple of numerous sell-through video companies, and therefore should be easy to locate.
