Overview

Olivia DeHavilland stars as a music student whose education is secretly subsidized by the aging owner of a phonograph factory (Charles Winninger). The old man hopes to vicariously live his own musical aspirations through the young woman's success. DeHavilland, however, is just as interested in romance as in music, and with the help of her best friend (Jane Wyman) she sets about to win a handsome husband (Jeffrey Lynn). Featured in the supporting cast are William Orr, the son-in-law of studio head Jack Warner (and later a TV producer) and former silent screen ingenue Mabel Taliaferro. My Love Came Back, a remake of a mid-1930s Austrian film musical, was the first Hollywood assignment for director Curtis Bernhardt.

A fairly neglected but quite charming little film, My Love Came Back might be better known today had it featured a different actress in its lead. It's not that Olivia de Havilland does anything wrong, mind you; as a matter of fact, she's quite pleasant and very engaging throughout. There also are no slurs cast against her skills as an actress, which are considerable. But Love really demands a lighter touch than de Havilland displays here, a more innate sense of exactly how to play these scenes so that the most precise little drops of comedy fall lightly off of them. It's a rare talent, and if de Havilland doesn't possess it, she's got enough of her own presence to make you forgive her, even as you wish that this scene had just a little more pizzazz or that one was pulled back ever so slightly. The screenplay is predictable in general plot outline, but it has some nice surprises in its details, and while the characters all act true to form, they have a bit more flesh attached to them than is often the case. Jeffrey Lynn is handsome, if a bit undistinguished acting-wise, as the love interest, and the supporting cast is aces all the way, especially Charles Winninger, Jane Wyman and Eddie Albert. Curtis Bernhardt's direction is generally smooth, and the whole affair is a most pleasant way to pass the time.
