Overview

Love in Bloom ostensibly stars George Burns and Gracie Allen,but the team is actually comedy relief for the romantic leads, Joe Morrison and Dixie Lee. Burns and Allen are travelling carnival performers working in a rundown tent show for Lee's father. Lee tires of her nomad life and heads to New York, where she meets would-be songwriter Morrison. The hero loves Lee, but each time the twosome makes wedding plans some crisis or other gets in the way. The course of True Love finally runs smooth, but audiences can't help but feel disappointed that Burns and Allen aren't given more to do (Allen's big scene, set in a grocery store, is painfully unfunny). If nothing else, Love in Bloom features a rare screen appearance by Dixie Lee, better known as the first wife of Bing Crosby.

Although the comedy team of George Burns and Gracie Allen receives top billing in Love in Bloom, the two are definitely supporting players. This will be a disappointment to fans looking for a large dose of Burns' deadpan delivery or Allen's supreme ditziness, but for those who like the duo in small doses, Bloom should be fine. The real stars of Bloom are Joe Morrison and Dixie Lee. Morrison is no great shakes as an actor; wooden is unfortunately the term that most applies. However, he is possessed of a very nice singing voice -- clearly the reason he was hired for the part -- and is a handsome fellow. Lee comes off considerably better; she sings well, looks great and acts very well. Playing one of those "tough but tender" parts, Lee makes the most of a screenplay which too often veers into some sappy territory. Bloom also benefits from some snappy and catchy Harry Revel-Mack Gordon songs, which definitely add to one's enjoyment. As for Burns and Allen, they do very well with material that isn't always up to snuff, although Allen's speeding ticket segment is definitely a plus. Bloom's other supporting players are also a boon.
