Made without any of director/producer William Castle's famed gimmicks (such as "Illusion-O" glasses or skeleton dummies flying out over the audience), Let's Kill Uncle has to rise or fall on its own devices. It doesn't actually rise or fall; it more like it hovers, which means that it's a perfectly adequate little "chiller," though it could have been a great deal more fun. The basic premise is very solid, and a lot of the set pieces involved -- such as the shark in the swimming pool -- are pretty foolproof, too. Yet the film is never either as much fun or as scary as it wants to be. Part of the blame rests with its young protagonists, Pat Cardi and Mary Badham, who are fine, but not much more. The greater blame is with Castle, who is operating on automatic for too much of the film. Fortunately, Nigel Green is around to supply some pepper to the proceedings, and his slimy uncle is much more on track than the rest of the film.
