Overview

Based on the radio series of the same name, Gunsmoke was network television's first "adult" western. The series debuted in October of 1955; by the time it finished its run 20 years later, it had set a still-unchallenged record as the longest-running dramatic series in TV history. James Arness starred as Matt Dillon, marshal of Dodge City, Kansas (the role was originally offered to John Wayne, who turned down the assignment, but not before recommending Arness as his replacement). Other regulars included Amanda Blake as Kitty, proprietress of the Long Branch saloon; Dennis Weaver as Chester Good, Dillon's limping, drawling deputy; and Milburn Stone as crusty, cynical Doc Adams. Several black-and-white, 30-minute episodes of Gunsmoke, all produced between 1955 and 1962, are currently available on video, two episodes per tape. Titles include "Matt Gets It" (the series pilot), "The Pest Hole," "Hack Prine," "The Killer," "Kitty's Outlaw," "The Guitar" (scripted by Sam Peckinpah), "Sins of the Father," "Last Fling," "Hot Spell," and "Word of Honor." Also available on cassette are two of the color, 60-minute Gunsmoke installments: "The Avengers" and "The Gold Mine."
