Overview

Angelina Jolie first gained a great deal of notice for playing the doomed model Gia. The made-for-cable film's unrated version comes to DVD with a standard full-frame transfrer that preserves the original broadcast aspect ratio of 1.33:1. The English soundtrack is rendered in Dolby Digital Stereo. English, French, and Spanish subtitles are accessible. There are no supplemental materials of any consequence.

Not many made-for-TV movies celebrate the lives of doomed hellions, but what makes Gia a true rarity in the genre is Angelina Jolie's jaw-dropping performance. Jolie's turn as Gia Carangi -- a supermodel of the late-'70s who died of an AIDS-related illness at age 26 -- actually manages to match the film's hype-happy tagline: "Too beautiful to die. Too wild to live." The film, cowritten by director Michael Cristofer and novelist Jay McInerny, begins with Carangi as a child in Philadelphia, observing from the bedroom as her blue-collar parents go through the messy motions toward divorce. Within what seems like minutes, though, she's a tempestuous teen running off to New York City, where she quickly gets the attention of model maven Wilhemina Cooper (Faye Dunaway) -- and not just by plunging a switchblade into her receptionist's desk. She's got something different. Something special. And, since she's played by Anelina Jolie, she's got lips like sofa cushions. The model's professional life is a cruel one, though; and while she scores about 16 on a sexual-attraction scale of ten, true love eludes her. Drugs find her, and with them, HIV. This is not a happy movie, but Jolie's full-throttle approach to every scene -- she seduces a boy in her dad's luncheonette, then the makeup woman, and so on -- makes for a totally absorbing two hours. The dazzling performance earned her a Golden Globe Award and an Emmy nomination, and it remains the wildest turn in Jolie's increasingly distinctive filmography.

Just prior to her Academy Award-winning performance for Best Supporting Actress in Girl, Interrupted (1999), Angelina Jolie received major kudos for her acting with the lead role of Gia Maria Carangi in this haunting biopic, earning a Golden Globe Award, a Screen Actors Guild Award, and an Emmy nomination. A former model with a rebellious personality herself, Jolie is versatile and resplendently raw as a vulnerable 19-year-old swimming with the sharks in the competitive fashion scene or as a junkie walking the alleys of New York looking for her next fix. Jolie's powerful presence brings Gia's wild spirit to life, while Faye Dunaway is elegant and well suited to her role as the savvy yet nurturing Wilhelmina. Anecdotes from characters representing Gia's friends and family, along with black-and-white behind-the-scenes intercuts, effectively give the film a more journalistic quality, although director Michael Cristofer goes overboard with stylistic affectations which are intrusive rather than supportive to the story. Like Gia's short life, this made-for-TV movie gets as glamorous as it does gritty: Stylish and colorfully bold photo sessions eventually give way to a devastatingly tragic visual of the supermodel's bout with AIDS.
