Overview

Director Robert Altman reteams with Cookie's Fortune scribe Anne Rapp for this tale of a Dallas gynecologist and the parade of anxious patients, haggard family members, and potential love interests who come his way. Richard Gere plays the titular role of Dr. Sullivan Travis, a calm, successful, and much sought-after ob-gyn who witnesses his normally stable life come apart over the course of one rainy autumn. As the film opens, Dr. T and his wife Kate (Farrah Fawcett) are preparing for the wedding of their Dallas Cowboys cheerleader daughter Dee Dee (Kate Hudson). Their other daughter -- the Kennedy-assassination conspiracy theorist Connie (Tara Reid) -- has her doubts about the impending nuptials, but Dr. T chalks them up to routine sibling jealousy. Meanwhile, escaping a messy divorce, boozy sister-in-law Peggy (Laura Dern) moves into the Travis household with her three toddler daughters in tow. For release, Dr. T finds solace target shooting and golfing (occasionally at the same time) with his buddies, and at his country club, he meets a beguiling golf pro, Bree (Helen Hunt). When the childlike Kate loses her grip on reality during a flatware shopping spree, Bree offers to give the kindly doctor some lessons in his swing -- both on and off the fairways. Dr. T had its North American Premiere at the 2000 Toronto International Film Fest.

Leave it to Robert Altman, American cinema's great iconoclast, to make a comedy about a gynecologist, and a surprisingly charming one at that. Working from a screenplay by Anne Rapp (Cookie's Fortune), Altman, in his typically idiosyncratic manner, chronicles one man's attempt to understand the dizzying array of women in his life. Richard Gere, in his best role since Internal Affairs, gives an appealingly mellow performance as the titular Dr. Travis, better known as Dr. T., a handsome, good-natured gynecologist who caters to Dallas's well-heeled (and high-heeled) female population. Done up in flashy designer suits, with hair and hats the size of Texas, each of these ladies-who-lunch loves Dr. T. because he treats her like a queen, just as he does his pampered wife, Kate (Farrah Fawcett). Kate's hospitalization after a mental collapse -- the diagnosis: too much love -- leaves a bewildered Dr. T. vulnerable to the attentions of a no-nonsense golf pro (Helen Hunt). No one can can direct an ensemble like Altman, and the director uses his signature layered dialogue tracks to wonderful effect here, conveying the daily maelstrom of Dr. T's waiting room as the ladies vie for their turn in the stirrups. Although some of the performers, such as Liv Tyler as a mysterious maid of honor, get lost in the confusion of crisscrossing subplots, there are terrific turns by Kate Hudson as Dr. T's cheerleader daughter, Shelley Long as his harried head nurse, and Laura Dern, hilariously perfect as his alcoholic, about-to-be-divorced sister-in-law. Filled with wonderful Altmanesque touches -- the image of an exhausted Mexican maid nipping from a glass of champagne in the midst of a chaotic wedding shower -- Dr. T and the Women, while not a great Altman film, is still a rare pleasure.
