Overview

A sightless gunslinger and his "seeing-eye" steed is in charge of safely transporting 50 mail-order brides to an isolated Texas town. Unfortunately, a group of Mexican bandits have their own designs on the women. This comical Italian western follows the attempts of the blind hero to rescue them. By the time he gets there the women have decided that they have had enough of all men.

Make no mistake, Blindman is not for every viewer. Old-fashioned Western fans are likely to be alienated by its emphasis on bare flesh, gritty violence, and bad-taste humor while modern cult movie fans might find its storytelling style a bit too casual and old-fashioned. It's also got a few problems in the script department. After an exciting first half, the plotting starts to chase its tail and causes the film to devolve into repetitive skirmishes. However, those cult movie fans already converted to the cause of the spaghetti Western are likely to be amused by Blindman. Despite its patchiness, the script has some amusingly off-kilter humor and Tony Anthony creates a memorably offbeat protagonist that is as good with the one-liners as he is with a gun. Pop music fans are also likely to be amused by the appearance of Ringo Starr, fresh from the breakup of the Beatles, playing a supporting role as the villain's lovelorn brother (he's actually pretty good in the role). Best of all, Ferdinando Baldi directs the film in a well-crafted style that lends it an impressive amount of visual flair. Ultimately, Blindman is best left to Euro-cult enthusiasts, but said audience is likely to appreciate its offbeat charms.
