Overview

This loosely fact-based oater attempts to mimic the youthful heartthrobs in Western garb formula of Young Guns (1988), as well as the cheeky humor and some plot elements of Butch Cassidy and the Sundance Kid (1969). Colin Farrell stars as Jesse James, who returns home from the Civil War to his small hometown to find that a crooked railroad baron (Harris Yulin) has been illegally forcing the residents from the homesteads to make way for a new rail line. Enraged, James leads a band of outlaws including his brother Frank (Gabriel Macht), Cole Younger (Scott Caan), and Younger's brothers Bob (Will McCormack) and Jim (Gregory Smith) on a criminal spree of bank robbing. Although their Robin Hood-style tactics soon make them local heroes, the James-Younger gang members find themselves pursued by the dogged Allan Pinkerton (Timothy Dalton), the world's first "private eye." Along the way, Jesse also finds romance with Zee Mimms (Ali Larter), the daughter of a local doctor (Ronny Cox).

Every generation of moviegoers is treated to a new take on fabled frontier bandits Frank and Jesse James, if not several. This latest retelling of their story, in addition to showcasing several of today’s up-and-coming young stars, positively hums with lead-slinging action. Colin Farrell, who impressed critics with his riveting performance in the Vietnam War drama Tigerland, plays Jesse as a simple Missouri farm boy returning to his Missouri homestead after the Civil War, just as greedy railroad magnates are forcing families from their claims. When their Ma (Kathy Bates) is killed in a deliberately set explosion that destroys their home, Jesse and Frank (Gabriel Macht) join the Younger brothers (Scott Caan, Gregory Smith, Will McCormick) to bedevil the railroad men by stealing their payroll money and terrorizing their construction crews. Director Les Mayfield (Blue Streak), continuing a Hollywood tradition, somewhat whitewashes the James-Younger gang; they’re characterized as high-spirited youths whose desire for revenge is gradually subsumed by their boyish love of adventure. Farrell’s Jesse, in fact, comes off like the lead singer in a boy band, and his fellow bandits like group members squabbling for billing. Ali Larter contributes a saucy supporting turn as Jesse’s girlfriend, Zerelda, and Timothy Dalton is appropriately sinister as Allan Pinkerton, the ruthless detective assigned to track down and destroy the gang. Mayfield, co-writer John Rogers, and editor Michael Tronick defend their interpretation of the legend in a feature-length commentary for the DVD, which also includes four featurettes (each covering a different aspect of the film’s production), deleted scenes, storyboards, production and publicity stills, cast/crew bios, and theatrical trailers.
