Overview

Drum Magic was George Jenkins's follow-up to his popular Drum Stuff. Both are available on V.S.O.P LP reissues. This particular release, which has the same personnel (unlisted on the LP) as the earlier date (drummer Jenkins, Plas Johnson on tenor, pianist Ray Johnson, and bassist Duke Harris) is in the same style, mixing together swing, bop, and early R&B while looking toward rock & roll. Highlights include "It Had to Be You," "Air Mail Special," and "G.J.'s Drums." This album is worth picking up for the fine playing of Plas Johnson. ~ Scott Yanow
