Overview

The towering sand dunes along Lake Michigan, not far from Chicago, are one of the most unexpected natural features of Indiana.

The second edition of Dreams of Duneland beautifully illustrates the dunes region, from the past to the present. Since the first edition, the Indiana Dunes area has become an official national park. With more than 400 stunning images, many of them new, Dreams of Duneland showcases the breathtaking sand dunes, as well as the rest of this newly minted park, which includes savanna, wetland, prairie, and forest and is home to a wide variety of plant and animal species. Kenneth J. Schoon reveals how the preserved area of the Indiana Dunes National Park—which sits by residential communities, businesses, and cultural attractions—has a long history of competition among farmers, fur traders, industrialists, and conservationists.

Featuring a new foreword and afterword and many updates throughout, this gorgeous new edition will have you planning a trip to the extraordinary Indiana Dunes.

What People are Saying About This

ecologist, United States Geological Survey - Noel Pavlovic

This book highlights the places that inspired people who dreamed of the potential of an unusual and dynamic landscape. Dreams of Duneland brings together disparate and untold stories that were previously scattered among many sources.

Geof R. Benson

Many people are surprised to learn that ecological science in America got its start in the diverse ecosystems of the Indiana Dunes—especially when you see the juxtaposition of the stunning natural beauty and heavy industry along the south shore of Lake Michigan. Dreams of Duneland takes you on a delightful journey through history as it tells the fascinating story of the geology, ecology, and impact of people on this incredible landscape.

National Park Service, Manager, Indiana Dunes National Shoreline - Dale Endquist

I share Ken Schoon's feelings that the dunes and the dunes parks are under-appreciated. Two previous books on the dunes are out of print and Indiana Dunes National Lakeshore will celebrate its 50th anniversary in 2016.

Natalie Johnson

Dreams of Duneland is more than a collection of beautiful imagery of an unparalleled landscape through every glorious season. It also effectively captures the struggles and triumphs, both in the past and present, to attain and preserve the remarkable Indiana Dunes.
