Emily Durante makes the most of a plot that is slow, complex, and without much suspense. She maintains a steady pace and creates a feeling of intimacy between the dragons and their riders. The story picks up where the last in the series left off; the dragons have been saved from a deadly plague but are now too few in number. Something must be done to prepare Pern for the next threadfall. The primary device for trying to resolve the dramatic situation is time travel. Durante makes subtle adjustments in the characters’ tones as they come across each other (and sometimes themselves) at different ages. J.E.M. © AudioFile 2011, Portland, Maine
