Doodlebug Doodlebug Your House Is On Fire
Doodle Bug Doodle Bug Your House Is on Fire is a classic coming-of-age novel. It portrays eccentric and sturdy characters that will stick with you long after you put the book away.
Set in the mid-1950s, Doodle Bug is the story of 17-year-old Corley Malone when the materially modest but spiritually rich ways of life in rural West Virginia are fast being replaced by "progress".
Such things as swimming holes, summer catfishing, one-room schools, and satisfaction from days of hard work in fresh air--are rapidly being lost.
But Samples is no mushy romantic; Corley also raises hell on back roads and beer joints. Corley is innocently profane and profanely innocent, and it is this seamless integration that gives the book its unique flavor. His antics provide doses of laugh-out-loud humor--and I haven't even told you about the dynamite yet.
As he approaches graduation in an era when the three R's meant readin', ritin' and Route 35 to Ohio, Corley is faced with moving for a job, or staying with his austere yet emotionally rewarding life.
He is also torn between the old time music he plays, and upstart rock 'roll--all the while still grappling with the differences between love and passion. I think you'll like the answers he finds.

About the Author

Mack Samples spent his professional career as a college professor and administrator. He has always been a writer, a traditional musician, and a square dance caller. This is his fifth book. His first three books were a trilogy of novels concerning a struggling musician in rural West Virginia during the 1950’s and 60’s. His fourth book consisted of a collection of ghost stories and tales from the Elk River Valley. All of his books have been good sellers.
In addition to writing books, Mack has also published articles for Goldenseal Magazine, and Wild, Wonderful West Virginia and has written a weekly column for West Virginia Hillbilly and the Glenville Democrat.
He is also a widely known musician, performing with the Samples Brothers Band throughout West Virginia and surrounding states. The Samples Brothers have produced five good selling recordings. Their most recent one, Acoustic Reflections, is currently a hot seller on the traditional music circuit. During the 2003 Vandalia Gathering, Mack was presented with the Vandalia Award, West Virginia’s highest folk life award.
Mack and his wife, Thelma, currently live on a fifty acre spread near Duck, WV where they raise a big garden, keep a few honeybees, and make a stab at living in the old traditions.
